Battling Corona Virus, Covid-19, by focusing on Hypertension and Obesity

During this time of the Coronavirus crisis, also known as COVID-19, there is different information coming from a variety of media platforms. Do we lend an ear to politicians or to those in the world of Science and Medicine? Since we can never truly know the full agenda behind politicians or tv networks, we should focus on what we know to be true and turn our attention toward Science and Medicine, not fake news.

The best thing we can do at this time is to use preventative measures to strengthen our immune systems. We have learned from the information provided by international medical associations, that 99% of the people that died in Italy had some other comorbidity factor. This means they have died from the disease paired with at least one other pre-existing condition such as cancer, history of heart attacks and strokes, heart disease, diabetes and autoimmune disorders. The one comorbidity factor that is in the data that is not being talked about, was in the data of a sample study conducted in Wuhan, China; hypertension.

They observed that the group most at risk are people that have hypertension, which means they have high blood pressure. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), the preeminent group of scientists for coronavirus, COVID-19 for the United States Government reported that 108 million Americans (30% of the population) have high blood pressure. They suggest that 75% of people should be trying to control their high blood pressure by minimizing the amount of salt they use, exercising more and avoiding foods high in saturated fats and trans fats, and not eating or lowering their intake of fried foods. Blood pressure can be lowered without the use of medication yet Americans are not practicing the habit of healthy eating or adjusting lifestyle changes to do so.

One of the main causes of high blood pressure is being overweight. Of the fatalities being reported, 75% had high blood pressure that was not being treated. We know that high blood pressure is one factor that suppresses our immune system, and we also know that those of us who are overweight almost certainly have high blood pressure. While scientists are working diligently to try to understand the biological relationship between this virus and high blood pressure and why it is a mortality factor, the general advice is to have your blood pressure tested, eat healthy, and exercise more. If high blood pressure is uncontrolled or not treated properly, then you are more likely to have a stroke or a heart attack.
